Arknights has a total of 8 classes, each with their own priorities and uses.

Vanguards

Deployment location: Ground.
While they're weaker than Guards and Defenders, they're the cheapest and they do have C-recovery skills. Making them a good choice for early stage setup, as they greatly help in getting the Cost needed to place the rest of the team.
It's advisable to replace them with Guards/Defenders after the rest of the team has been setup.

Guards

Deployment location: Ground.
Guards are the main melee DPS units.
Some guards, like Frostleaf, do have ranged attacks as well.

Defenders

Deployment location: Ground.
Defenders are good at holding a line, but they tend to not be able to deal damage of their own (notable exception: Hoshiguma), so having a DPS unit near them is usually a must.

Specialist

Deployment location: Ground.
Specialists are fairly similar to Guards, but with more specialized roles and skills, making them a niche choice.

Snipers

Deployment location: Elevated ground.
Snipers are your main DPS for a lot of stages. They're best used against unarmored enemies.
Their rate of fire is faster than that of Casters.

Casters

Deployment location: Elevated ground.
While slower than Snipers, they deal more damage, especially against armored enemies.
Certain Casters, like Ifrit, use AoE attacks. They cost more than a normal Caster but they can damage everyone in range at once.

Medics

Deployment location: Elevated ground.
Instead of attacking the enemy, they instead heal any friendly unit within range.
Certain Medics, like Nightingale, have an AoE heal, they can heal atmost 3 allies in range at once, instead of one at a time.

Supporter

Deployment location: Elevated ground.
Supporters don't have an attack type of their own, so they mimic Snipers and Casters instead.
They either buff the team or debuff the enemy.

Drones

Not exactly a 'real' class, so to speak. This class is reserved for special deployable units, like the support units of certain operators (like Deepcolor's Tentacle) or walls for some stages.

Trivia

  • In the game files, Vanguards are sometimes referred to as Pioneers.
